A Red Flag Warning remains in effect today, October 9, from noon until 7:00 PM MDT, due to critical fire weather conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Cheyenne, WY, issued this warning for several areas, advising against all outdoor burning.
Affected areas include Pine Ridge/Nebraska National Forest, Niobrara/Lower Elevations of Converse/Thunder Basin National Grassland, Middle North Platte River Basin/Niobrara and Converse High Plains, North Laramie Range and Adjacent High Plains, North Laramie Valley/Shirley Basin, Ferris/Seminoe/Shirley Mountains, Central and West Carbon, Upper North Platte River Basin, North Snowy Range Foothills, and Bordeaux/Chugwater/Wheatland.
The NWS reports southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, combined with relative humidity levels between 12 to 18 percent. These conditions mean any fires that develop will spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended during this period. Local officials and fire crews have been advised of this Red Flag Warning.
