Signal Mountain and the wider Chattanooga community mourn the loss of Frank Jarman Sanders Jr., who passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the age of 84. Sanders, a resident of Ooltewah, dedicated over 45 years of his life to education and public service, leaving a significant mark on the Hamilton County School System and local organizations.
Sanders was a lifelong learner, earning his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, all within seven years. This was a remarkable academic achievement at the time. He retired from the Hamilton County School System, where he served as Director of Federal Programs, a role in which he demonstrated a deep commitment to the students and families he served.
Beyond his professional life, Sanders was an active and engaged member of the community. He was a member of Wayside Presbyterian Church on Signal Mountain and a former member of Tyner United Methodist Church. His dedication to service extended to his involvement with the Exchange Club and Kids on the Block, reflecting his passion for supporting his community.
Frank Sanders Jr. also found joy in gardening, nurturing and growing things with pride. He was a devoted fan of the Tennessee Vols and the Atlanta Braves, cheering on his favorite teams. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Elaine Sanders; his son, Steve (Margaret) Sanders of Chattanooga; his stepchildren, Christian (Lilian) Bruce of Signal Mountain, and Megan (Jeremy) Wood of Monroe, Georgia; and his four grandchildren, Joe Sanders, Graceanna Pines, Maisey Wood, and Easton Wood.
A private graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Wayside Presbyterian Church, located at 2502 Fairmount Pike, Signal Mountain, TN 37377, in lieu of flowers.
