CAL FIRE Bans Residential Burning in Nevada County
CAL FIRE suspended all burn permits for outdoor residential burning in Nevada County effective Monday, June 15, prohibiting homeowners from burning landscape debris in State Responsibility Areas. The suspension also covers Yuba, Placer and Sierra counties.
High volumes of dead grass and hotter, drier conditions across the region prompted the action. Homeowners must dispose of yard waste through chipping or delivery to biomass energy or green waste facilities.
CAL FIRE and firefighters statewide have responded to 31,489 fires since January 1, burning 60,773 acres. The department may issue restricted temporary permits for public health and safety reasons. Agricultural burning, land management, fire training and industrial burning may proceed with CAL FIRE inspection and a special permit.
CAL FIRE urges residents to prepare properties for wildfire season by clearing dead and dying vegetation within 100 feet of structures, landscaping with fire-resistant plants and non-flammable ground cover, and maintaining at least 100 feet of defensible space around homes and outbuildings. Residents should also prepare evacuation plans.
