Red Flag Warning Issued: Extreme Fire Conditions Expected
A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of Montana and Wyoming from October 8 to October 9, indicating critical fire weather conditions due to high winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures, prompting residents to take immediate precautions against fire.
BILLINGS, MT – The National Weather Service in Billings has issued a Red Flag Warning, effective from today, October 8, at 12:00 PM MDT until tomorrow, October 9, at 9:00 PM MDT. This warning signifies critical fire weather conditions, with low humidities, unseasonably warm temperatures, and strong gusty winds creating erratic fire behavior for new or existing fire starts.
Residents in affected areas, including Wheatland, Carbon, Park, Stillwater, Sweet Grass, and Gallatin Counties in Montana, and Big Horn, Johnson, Sheridan, and Washakie Counties in Wyoming, should take immediate precautions. This includes securing any potential ignition sources and refraining from outdoor burning.
Southwest winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph. Humidity levels will drop as low as 9 percent, and temperatures could climb to 88 degrees. These severe conditions are most pronounced in lower to middle elevations with fine fuels, and the strongest winds are anticipated in mountain locations and foothills west of Billings.
A Red Flag Warning means that extreme fire behavior is possible. The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures significantly increases the risk of rapid fire spread. The Fire Weather Watch previously in effect has been canceled.
