Sevier County Appoints Donnie Adams Road Superintendent

Staff Writer
June 11, 2026

The Sevier County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to appoint Donnie Adams as Road Superintendent, ending a four-month search to replace Jonas Smelcer, who resigned August 31.

Adams has served as interim superintendent since September 1. He joined the Highway Department in 2003 and became Assistant Road Superintendent in 2022.

The commissioners conducted a public nomination and review process under state law. The Mayor's Office accepted nominations through December 15, and the Steering Committee reviewed candidates who met Tennessee Highway Officials Certification Board requirements.

"Donnie has proven himself through years of service with the Highway Department," Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters said. "We are confident in his leadership."

Adams said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve the county.

The Road Superintendent position will appear on the ballot in the next county election. The primary is set for May 5, 2026, followed by the general election August 6, 2026.
