Tropical Storm Warning for Central Alabama: Prepare for Isaias Impacts

Central Alabama under Tropical Storm Warning/Watch for Hurricane Isaias; prepare for high winds, flooding, and isolated tornadoes starting late Friday night.

Staff Writer
10/09/2026 · Selma edition

Central Alabama residents are urged to finalize preparations as Hurricane Isaias approaches the Northern Gulf Coast. A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Dallas, Elmore, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, and Pike counties. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Bibb, Chambers, Chilton, Clay, Coosa, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lee, Perry, Pickens, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, and Tuscaloosa counties.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, reports Isaias is moving north-northeast at 14 mph with 105 mph winds, expected to make landfall Friday evening. Hazardous winds with gusts up to 50-60+ mph are anticipated late Friday night through Saturday, potentially causing widespread downed trees and power lines. Rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 4 inches, with isolated totals up to 5 inches, could lead to flash flooding, especially in urban and poor drainage areas.

Eastern portions of Central Alabama, mainly east of Interstate 65, face a Level 2 of 5 severe risk for isolated tornadoes. Residents in these areas should have multiple ways to receive Tornado Warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. Secure outdoor items now, as strong gusty winds or flooding can make preparations unsafe. Check on neighbors who may need assistance. The next update is expected around 5 AM CDT, or sooner if conditions warrant.
