Delaware Beaches Book Record Summer Amid Tourism Boom
DOVER, Del. — Delaware's tourism industry is bracing for its busiest summer ever, with record advance bookings flooding beach resorts and event venues across the state. The Delaware Tourism Office, citing strong post-Memorial Day momentum, anticipates sustained high demand through the season, building on 2023's milestone of 29.3 million visitors — a 2.4% jump from 2022, according to Rockport Analytics and Longwoods International reports. Visitor spending hit $7 billion that year, fueling 55,240 jobs and $724 million in state and local tax revenue, equivalent to $1,826 per household in savings.
Sussex County's beaches, including Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach, lead the surge, drawing crowds to sun-soaked shores and boardwalk attractions. The county hosted 381,200 sports travelers in 2023, part of 1.1 million statewide who pumped $231.4 million into local economies at venues, hotels and restaurants. New Castle County captured 40% of those sports visitors with 453,400, while Kent County saw 312,600, underscoring broad appeal from Wilmington's urban draws to Dover's motorsports.
The 2026 semiquincentennial celebrations amplify the buzz, with businesses from the Delaware Botanic Gardens in Dagsboro to coastal hotspots gearing up for America’s 250th birthday festivities. Overnight visitors numbered 9.9 million in 2023, contributing $4.7 billion to Delaware's GDP — over 5% of the total economy — and officials expect this summer's bookings to push those figures higher. 'We're optimistic for a banner season,' tourism leaders say, as record road and air travel projections from Memorial Day carry forward.
