China Tests Ballistic Missile in Pacific Ocean

WASHINGTON – China launched an unarmed intercontinental-range ballistic missile from a submarine, and the weapon landed in the southern Pacific Ocean. The United States monitored the test, according to an official statement by Thomas "Tommy" Pigott, a spokesperson, issued on July 6, 2026.

Pigott stated that the United States has concerns regarding China’s nuclear weapons development. He called Beijing's nuclear weapons expansion "rapid and opaque."

The United States has urged China to engage in discussions regarding arms control. The U.S. also advocates for a consistent notification arrangement for all intercontinental-range ballistic missile and space launches, aligning with commitments made by other P5 members.

Pigott affirmed the consistent defense commitments of the United States to its allies and partners.
