Niskayuna Receives $1M State Grant for River Road Water Main
The Town of Niskayuna will use $1 million in state funding to replace a water main on River Road that frequently breaks and disrupts service and traffic.
The grant comes through the Focused Attraction of Shovel-Ready Tracts New York program as part of a $6 million infrastructure package from the Schenectady County Metroplex Authority. Work will replace the main between the GE circle and Blatnick Park.
Daniel Bolke, the town's water, sewer, and engineering superintendent, said the project is ready to move forward. "We have already prepared the plans," he said. "With this grant we are able to progress toward construction."
The upgrade also supports potential expansion of the GE Vernova campus on Balltown Road into an advanced research and development hub for energy technologies. Empire State Development said the improved infrastructure will attract companies working on energy transition, alternative fuels, grid technology, and critical infrastructure security.
Town Supervisor Erin Cassady-Dorion called the investment a win for both infrastructure and economic development. "It positions GE Vernova for continued growth while upgrading an aging water main in town," she said.
