Gas Explosion at Atlanta Complex Tied to Copper Theft, 40 Displaced
The explosion ripped through Building C at Northside Plaza on Markham Street just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, shredding part of the structure and scattering debris across the courtyard. According to Integral Property Management, which owns the complex, an intruder broke into a vacant apartment to steal copper wiring. When the person used an open flame inside the unit, accumulated natural gas ignited in a catastrophic blast.
Emergency responders had warning signs hours before the explosion. Nearby businesses called 911 around noon and again at 2 p.m. to report a strong smell of gas in the area, with one call coming around 1:45 p.m. Despite these reports, the gas leak—caused by the copper theft—went unresolved until the blast occurred.
A person of interest was hospitalized with severe burns and is now in stable condition, though authorities have not released their identity or confirmed whether they were formally charged. Atlanta Fire Rescue confirmed that the explosion destroyed much of Building C, which sits less than half a mile from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The blast displaced between 40 and 19 residents, depending on reporting, with 19 families forced to relocate.
Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association President Steve Yazell told investigators that trespassing and copper theft are chronic problems at the complex, with residents regularly reporting break-ins at vacant units. Copper theft has become an epidemic across Georgia's urban areas, as thieves target wiring, plumbing, and other metals to sell for scrap. The Northside Plaza explosion underscores the dangers posed when theft attempts collide with utility hazards.
Atlanta Police and Atlanta Fire Rescue are continuing their investigation into the blast. Property management said it is fully cooperating with authorities as officials work to determine whether charges will be filed against the injured person found at the scene.
