Forsyth Park Fountain Restoration Wins State Award
The City of Savannah's restoration of the historic fountain at Forsyth Park has received the Chairman's Award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, the organization announced in May.
The Chairman's Award recognizes projects of exceptional significance in historic preservation. The Georgia Trust presented the honor as part of its annual recognition of 28 preservation projects and individuals across the state.
"This award is important because it recognizes the importance of preservation, especially for something as beloved as our historic Forsyth Park Fountain," said Brent Boyd, division director for Historic Parks and Squares.
The fountain underwent its first major renovation in more than 30 years. Workers completed the project in December 2025, preserving the fountain's historic integrity while upgrading mechanical systems and structural components. The fountain was originally installed in 1858.
The City's Park & Tree Department's Historic Parks and Squares Division led the project. Robinson Iron Works, Landmark Preservation, Pineapple Fountain, Pool and Spa, and Integrated Power Connections worked on restoring the fountain's cast-iron elements, structural components, mechanical systems, and surrounding infrastructure.
The Park and Tree Commission also received the Stewardship Award from Historic Savannah Foundation for its care and restoration of the fountain.
"The Fountain is an icon of Savannah and Park and Tree's continued care for it represents the hard work it takes to ensure Savannah's parks remain beautiful places for our community to enjoy," said Collier Neely, president and CEO of Historic Savannah Foundation. "HSF is pleased to see this project completed. We hope to see this type of excellence and care in the future preservation projects across Savannah's parks and squares."
The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation has recognized preservation projects and individuals across Georgia for nearly 50 years based on their community impact and adherence to national standards for historic preservation.
