Copper Theft Sparks Gas Blast at Atlanta's Northside Plaza
The explosion rocked Northside Plaza Apartments on Markham Street just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, destroying much of Building C less than half a mile from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta Fire Rescue reported the blast followed two 911 calls from nearby businesses—one around noon and another at 1:45 p.m.—alerting to a strong gas smell. Property manager Integral Property Management stated in a release that an intruder broke into the vacant unit, damaged gas lines while stealing copper wiring, and lit an open flame that ignited accumulated gas.
One person of interest suffered serious burns and is now in stable condition at a hospital, authorities said. Atlanta Police confirmed the theft attempt as the cause after sifting through rubble for hours. The unit was already vacated as part of the complex's redevelopment plan, but 19 families from nearby occupied units were displaced; 40 residents were initially reported affected, with the Red Cross aiding those in need.
Residents described frequent trespassers in vacant apartments and persistent copper thefts, a problem plaguing aging complexes in the area. Integral Property Management is cooperating fully with investigators from Atlanta Fire Rescue and police, who continue probing the incident. No arrests have been announced, and the injured person's identity remains undisclosed.
