MOBILE CENTRAL – October 9, 2026, 6:53 AM CDT – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, AL, has issued an Extreme Storm Surge Warning for Mobile Central, effective immediately until 3:00 PM UTC today.

Residents in Mobile, Prichard, and Theodore are advised to remain sheltered in a safe location and not venture outside. Life-threatening storm surge is possible, with potential inundation of 3-5 feet above ground in surge-prone areas through Saturday morning. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete; evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. The NWS indicates the main surge event impacts are currently unfolding.

Significant wind impacts are also expected, with peak winds of 25-35 mph and gusts up to 65 mph. The NWS warns of potential for wind from 58 to 73 mph, which can cause significant damage to roofing, siding, and mobile homes, and turn unsecured objects into dangerous projectiles. Several large trees may be snapped or uprooted, leading to impassable roads. Scattered power and communications outages are likely. All remaining efforts to protect life and property should be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before the wind becomes hazardous.

A Flood Watch remains in effect due to potential major flooding from heavy rain, with an additional 1-3 inches expected. Major rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to take action will likely result in serious injury or loss of life.
