High Rip Current Risk Issued for Gulf Coast Beaches
A High Rip Current Risk is in effect for coastal Alabama and Florida until Monday evening, with dangerous rip currents expected, according to the National Weather Service.
A High Rip Current Risk has been issued for coastal areas of Alabama and Florida, effective immediately. This warning is in effect from 5:17 AM CDT today, October 3, until 7:00 PM CDT on Monday, October 5.
The affected areas include Mobile Coastal and Baldwin Coastal Counties in Alabama, and Escambia Coastal, Santa Rosa Coastal, and Okaloosa Coastal Counties in Florida.
The National Weather Service Mobile AL reports that dangerous rip currents are expected. Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 8 AM CDT this morning, October 3, for the same coastal areas. Minor coastal flooding is expected, potentially affecting lots, parks, and roads, with only isolated road closures anticipated.
For those in affected areas, if travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
When swimming, always do so near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
