Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Along Gulf Coast Through Saturday Evening
Dangerous rip currents are expected along the coasts of Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties from Friday morning through Saturday evening; swim near a lifeguard and know how to escape a rip current.
Coastal residents and visitors in Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin. Dangerous rip currents are expected from Friday morning, October 9, through Saturday evening, October 10.
Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The NWS emphasizes the importance of swimming near a lifeguard. If you find yourself caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and signal for help by calling or waving.
This advisory is in effect for all coastal areas within Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties.
