Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Dangerous Ocean Conditions Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Santa Barbara County's coast until Saturday, September 30, warning of dangerous rip currents, 3-5 foot breaking waves, and potential minor tidal overflows.
Santa Barbara County residents and visitors are advised to remain out of the water due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. The statement is effective immediately, from Thursday, September 28 at 2:52 AM PDT, and remains in effect until Saturday, September 30 at 4:00 PM PDT.
This advisory specifically impacts the Santa Barbara County Southwestern Coast and Santa Barbara County Southeastern Coast. Dangerous rip currents and breaking waves of 3 to 5 feet are expected. Minor tidal overflows are also possible, particularly on Monday and Tuesday.
Impacts include an increased risk of ocean drowning, as rip currents can pull individuals out to sea. Waves pose a risk of washing people off beaches and rocks, and can capsize small boats nearshore. Pooling of seawater may occur around high tide in beach and harbor areas, including Santa Barbara Harbor. Enhanced beach erosion is also possible.
The NWS advises staying near occupied lifeguard towers if entering the water. Rock jetties are particularly dangerous under these conditions, and individuals should stay off the rocks.
