Beach Hazards: Dangerous Rip Currents and Elevated Surf Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Santa Barbara County's southwestern and southeastern coasts until Tuesday afternoon, warning of dangerous rip currents, elevated surf, and potential minor flooding.
Santa Barbara County residents and visitors are advised to remain out of the water due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. The statement is effective immediately, October 12 at 8:19 PM PDT, and will remain in effect until Tuesday, October 13 at 2:00 PM PDT.
The affected areas include the Santa Barbara County Southwestern Coast and Santa Barbara County Southeastern Coast. Dangerous rip currents and elevated surf are expected. High tides are anticipated to peak around 7.1 feet between 11:30 AM and noon on Tuesday morning.
Minor flooding of seawater is possible around high tide in low-lying beach and harbor areas, and minor beach erosion may occur. There is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, as well as capsize small boats nearshore.
To ensure safety, remain out of the water or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in these conditions; stay off the rocks. Additional Beach Hazards Statements may be issued for continued elevated tides and surf into at least Thursday.
