Sanibel property owners along the Gulf or Pine Island Sound must notify the city before trimming or altering mangroves. The City of Sanibel, delegated authority by the State of Florida, requires prior notification and inspections by Natural Resources staff before and after any work on these vital coastal trees. This applies from Bowman's Beach to the Sanibel Isles canals.

Mangroves, including Red, Black, and White varieties, provide critical habitat for marine life and stabilize shorelines. They also improve water quality and offer nesting sites for wading birds.

To maintain a view while protecting mangroves, property owners can trim within the "riparian fringe," a 50-foot band from the most landward to the most waterward trunk. Trimming restrictions apply based on mangrove height: plants under 6 feet cannot be trimmed. Those 6 to 24 feet may be trimmed up to 25% annually, but not below 6 feet. Mangroves over 24 feet cannot have their height reduced, though 25% of lateral foliage may be trimmed annually. Mangroves taller than 10 feet require trimming by a certified Professional Mangrove Trimmer (PMT).

A permit from the Natural Resource Department is required for any mangrove alteration or trimming outside the riparian fringe.

Residents interested in becoming a City of Sanibel PMT can contact the Natural Resources Department at 239-472-3700 or [email protected].
