Sanibel families can explore more than 20 trucks and specialty vehicles Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel Captiva Road. The free 2nd Annual Touch-A-Truck event will give children and adults a hands-on look at the equipment that helps Sanibel and Lee County operate.

The event allows families to meet the professionals who operate emergency, utility and construction vehicles while learning about public safety, infrastructure and community services. Organizers will open the event to the general public from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., following a Sensory-Friendly Hour from 10 to 11 a.m.

Participating agencies include Sanibel Fire Rescue District, Sanibel Police Department, Lee County EMS, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, LCEC, Lee County Mosquito Control District, City of Sanibel Public Works, the Lee County Library System’s Mobile Library Bus, Creel Tractor Company, All Superior Auto Works, Mission BBQ, the Lee County Department of Transportation and LeeFlight, operated by Lee Health.

Children can climb aboard select vehicles, including fire engines, police vehicles, construction equipment, utility trucks and specialty vehicles. LeeFlight will bring a helicopter to the Sanibel Recreation Center exclusively during the 10 to 11 a.m. sensory-friendly period. The aircraft may depart if emergency response crews receive a call.

Admission is free. Families can bring cameras to capture the event. Residents seeking more information can contact the Sanibel Recreation Center at 239-472-0345.
