Sanford Tree Trimming: Prepare Before Storm Season
Sanford residents who trim trees as storms approach create a hazard for their neighborhoods, Public Works officials say.
When storm warnings arrive, residents cut down tons of branches just as collection trucks must suspend operations for safety. Branches piled on curbs during a hurricane become high-velocity projectiles. Winds exceeding 70 mph can launch oak branches, palm fronds, and logs through windows, into cars, and against power lines.
Trim trees during calm weather early in the season instead. This gives Public Works crews time to collect and dispose of debris safely. Once an official storm warning is issued for the area, stop trimming immediately. Leave branches on the tree where they are structurally secure rather than piling them on the ground.
