Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Increased Rip Current and Sneaker Wave Risk
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for the Coastal North Bay and San Francisco Peninsula Coast from Saturday through Monday, warning of increased rip current and sneaker wave risks with waves up to 16 feet.
Coastal residents and visitors in the North Bay, including Point Reyes National Seashore, and along the San Francisco Peninsula Coast are advised to remain out of the water due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) San Francisco CA. This statement is effective from Saturday morning, October 10th, through Monday afternoon, October 12th, 2026.
An increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves is expected, with breaking waves reaching up to 16 feet. These dangerous conditions along the shoreline pose hazards including strong rip currents and large breaking waves.
The NWS advises the public to stay off of jetties, piers, rocks, and other waterside infrastructure. It is critical to remain out of the water to avoid hazardous surf and to NEVER turn your back on the ocean. Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather, surf, and tide forecasts at www.weather.gov/mtr for the latest updates.
