Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel: Flooding & Coastal Threats Continue for San Diego
San Diego County faces continued threats of coastal flooding, beach erosion, and localized flash flooding today from Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel, despite all tropical storm warnings being canceled.
San Diego County residents should remain vigilant as impacts from Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel are expected to continue into the early afternoon today, October 11. While all tropical storm watches and warnings have been canceled, the National Weather Service San Diego warns of ongoing threats, particularly for coastal areas, inland valleys, mountains, and deserts.
Coastal flooding and beach erosion are likely due to a combination of south and northwest swells, increased onshore winds, and high tides exceeding 7 feet. Surf is expected to peak at 6 to 9 feet today. Additionally, periods of heavy rain may lead to localized flooding and flash flooding, especially in areas that have already seen significant rainfall. The San Diego River at Fashion Valley is forecast to crest at 8.1 feet (action/monitor stage) just before noon today; those near the river should monitor forecasts.
Residents should avoid driving through flooded roads and remain alert for weakened trees and power lines due to lingering wind gusts. Stay away from downed power lines and hazardous debris. Do not go sightseeing in impacted communities as this interferes with emergency responders. The next update from the National Weather Service is expected around 8 AM PDT or sooner if conditions change.
