Residents in Osceola, Okeechobee, Coastal Indian River, Inland Indian River, Inland Southern Brevard, Mainland Southern Brevard, and Southern Brevard Barrier Islands should seek shelter indoors immediately due to strong thunderstorms. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne, FL, issued a Special Weather Statement at 2:37 PM EDT today, October 1st, effective until 3:00 PM EDT.

Doppler radar indicates strong thunderstorms are moving north at 30 mph, extending from near Kissimmee Prairie Preserve to near Vero Lake Estates. Automated weather stations have reported wind gusts up to 50 mph. These gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.

Locations impacted include Palm Bay, Melbourne, Sebastian, Vero Beach, and Fellsmere. In addition to strong winds, torrential rainfall is occurring with these storms and may lead to localized flooding. Drivers are advised not to drive through flooded roadways.
