Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Chaves County Residents Seek Immediate Shelter
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for central Chaves County until 7:15 PM MDT, with residents urged to seek immediate shelter from 60 mph winds, lightning, and potential flash flooding.
Residents of central Chaves County, including Roswell, Dexter, and surrounding areas, are advised to immediately seek shelter indoors due to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued by the National Weather Service in Albuquerque. The warning is in effect until 7:15 PM MDT.
As of 6:30 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Roswell, moving northeast at 45 mph. This storm is capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts, which may cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Continuous cloud-to-ground lightning is also occurring, and torrential rainfall may lead to flash flooding.
Impacted locations include Roswell, Dexter, Bitter Lake Wildlife Refuge, Bottomless Lakes State Park, Elkins, Midway, Greenfield, and Roswell Correctional Facility. Highways affected are Highway 380 between Mile Markers 156 and 192, and Highway 285 between Mile Markers 90 and 129.
All individuals in the affected area should seek shelter inside a well-built structure and stay away from windows. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
