A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, and Richmond counties in North Carolina, effective immediately until 11:00 AM EDT today, October 11.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh reports that at 9:56 AM EDT, severe thunderstorms were identified by radar along a line extending from near Asheboro to 11 miles north of Rockingham, moving east at 30 mph. These storms are capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts.

Impacts are expected to include damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Locations impacted include Asheboro, Randleman, Troy, North Carolina Zoo, Biscoe, Seagrove, Ramseur, Mount Gilead, Franklinville, and Robbins. This warning also covers Interstate 73 between Mile Markers 28 and 81.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 5:00 PM EDT for central North Carolina. Residents should remain alert for a possible tornado. If a tornado is spotted, immediately seek shelter in a basement or a small, central room in a sturdy structure. Straight-line winds can cause significant damage to trees, power lines, mobile homes, and other buildings. Seek shelter in a sturdy structure until the storm passes and stay away from windows due to flying debris.
