Rochester Named 2026 Tree City of the World
Rochester earned the Tree City of the World designation from the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, joining an international network of cities recognized for environmental excellence.
Mayor Malik D. Evans announced the designation April 17 during a ceremonial sugar maple planting at Cobbs Hill Park. He also proclaimed April 2026 as Native Plant Month, continuing a city tradition started in 2023.
The designation requires cities to demonstrate comprehensive planning, sustained investment, and long-term care for their tree canopy. Rochester has maintained Tree City USA status for 45 consecutive years.
The Mayor's Tree Expansion Initiative planted more than 6,000 trees during Evans' first term, exceeding its goal. The city updated its Urban Forest Master Plan in 2024 and partnered with Monroe County to celebrate Arbor Day and expand green infrastructure.
Evans linked the tree designation to Native Plant Month, saying native plants reduce water and maintenance costs, support local businesses, strengthen agriculture by sustaining pollinators, help manage stormwater, and enhance neighborhoods.
