Palm Beach Parents: School Bus Overcrowding Concerns

A Palm Beach County father is seeking answers after his 13-year-old daughter reportedly sat on the floor of a school bus returning from Suncoast High School. John Poraka said his daughter texted him about the incident, reporting several students lacked seats due to overcrowding.

According to the family, the bus carried students three to a seat, with at least seven students without available seating. The situation highlights potential capacity challenges as the new school year begins.

Palm Beach County School Superintendent Mike Bourke acknowledged that temporary capacity issues can occur in the initial weeks of school as student transportation needs fluctuate. The district, which serves over 50,000 students across a 2,300-square-mile area, urges families to register their children for bus services to help with route planning and capacity management.

In other news for students and parents, the Florida Lottery reminds families the deadline to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is Aug. 31. This application is crucial for students seeking Bright Futures scholarships. The Florida Academic Scholar scholarship requires a 3.5 weighted GPA, community service or work experience, and specific standardized test scores. The Florida Medallion Scholarship requires a minimum 3.0 GPA and other academic qualifications. The Bright Futures program has supported over one million students in higher education.

Nationally, U.S. inflation showed a slight improvement in July, remaining above pre-energy price hike levels. Federal data indicated a 3.4% annual price increase, down from 3.5% in June. Medical services, airfare, education, and communication saw the largest price jumps. Meat and milk prices rose 5% over the past year. The national average gasoline price was $4.03 per gallon.
