WMNF Celebrates 47 Years of Independent Radio with Nostalgic Programming and Familiar Voices

WMNF, Tampa Bay's independent community radio station, celebrated its 47th anniversary yesterday, September 14. The station first went on air in Tampa Bay on September 14, 1979, and marked the milestone with special programming throughout the day.

The anniversary celebration yesterday featured familiar voices and themed broadcasts. General Manager Randi Zimmerman hosted The Morning Show from 6–9 a.m., taking listeners back to 1979 with music and memories from the station's founding year. In the afternoon, Ben Herring's Traffic Jam from 3–6 p.m. was an all-vinyl show featuring music released in 1979.

Long-time voices like Bob Seymour, Linda Lu, and Ed Lehmann, who were part of WMNF's initial broadcasts in September 1979, continue to contribute to the station's programming. Bob Seymour hosted Jazz in the Night from 9 p.m.–midnight yesterday, featuring an in-studio visit from Chuck Owen. Owen, a five-time GRAMMY nominee and Guggenheim Fellow, founded the Jazz Studies program at USF and has been a significant figure in Tampa Bay's jazz community for decades.

Since its inception in 1979, WMNF has served as a platform for diverse music, independent journalism, and community voices. The station emphasizes its community-supported model, highlighting the contributions of programmers, volunteers, artists, and listeners over its nearly five decades on air.
