The Slow Jerkbait Bite Is Waking Up

Early spring bass are not lazy—they’re cold, suspicious, and standing where the sun can reach them. Fish a jerkbait like you’re trying to annoy a sleeping dog, and the first solid thump may come from the biggest fish of the day.

What’s Biting Early spring has fish moving, but nobody has agreed to sprint yet. Largemouth are sliding toward warming pockets, smallmouth are nosing onto rocky flats, and crappie are gathering around brush and the first green weeds. In clear lakes, work the northern bank after the sun gets on it. In stained water, look for protected coves with dark bottoms.

Saltwater anglers should check the back ends of tidal creeks on the last two hours of the incoming tide. Redfish, speckled trout, and striped bass—where they live—will use that push of water to pin shrimp and small baitfish against grass edges and creek mouths. Fish the falling tide when the water starts pouring out. That’s when the buffet gets dragged past ambush points.

The Jerkbait That Gets It Done My spring box carries three suspending minnows: one in a natural shad color, one in clownish orange-and-yellow, and one dark enough to look like a tax bill. Start with the natural color in clear water and the loud one when the lake looks like chocolate milk.

Throw it beside chunk rock, laydowns, dock corners, or the first drop outside a shallow spawning pocket. Crank it down, then work it with two short snaps and a long pause. In water below 50 degrees, pause five to ten seconds. I know that feels like you’ve broken the reel, but cold bass often eat while the lure is doing absolutely nothing. If the water climbs into the mid-50s, shorten the pause to two or three seconds.

Last spring, a kid in the next boat hooked his first bass on a jerkbait while his father was busy untangling a spinning reel that had achieved full bird’s-nest status. The fish came on the pause, naturally. The boy fought it with both hands on the rod, yelled loud enough to move every duck in the cove, and then asked whether bass had teeth. His dad said no. The bass immediately bit him on the thumb. Education was completed.

Dock Talk

• Use 8- to 10-pound fluorocarbon in clear water and a medium-action rod. A broomstick will rip hooks out.

• On a rising tide, cast ahead of the current and let the lure hang beside the grass. On a falling tide, cast across the drain and work it through the moving water.

• Tactical advice: when the bite feels dead, stop moving the bait longer—not faster. Count to ten before you decide the fish aren’t there.
