The Internet Is Quiet-Quitting the Internet

The hottest online move right now is acting like you have better things to do than be online. Naturally, everyone is documenting it, monetizing it, and adding a tasteful serif font.

This week’s trend landscape is less “look at me” and more “look at this blurry thing I saw while not looking at my phone.” The internet is developing an elaborate performance of disinterest, which is still performance—but at least it has better lighting.

Rising

Private-by-default posting. Public feeds are losing their glamour, while group chats, close-friends stories, and tiny invite-only communities are becoming the preferred places to be funny, messy, and unbranded. The shift started as a reaction to strangers, employers, and recommendation engines turning every post into permanent evidence, but it has become something more positive: people want audiences they can actually recognize. This matters because culture grows better in rooms where nobody is trying to “build a personal brand.”

The anti-content photo dump. A handful of ordinary pictures—an empty coffee cup, someone’s shoes, a crooked sunset—now carries more social currency than a carefully staged carousel. It began as an escape from influencer polish and has evolved into a new kind of proof-of-life: I went somewhere, noticed something, and did not hire a photographer about it. Of course, the dump is now its own aesthetic, but that is how the internet digests every sincere impulse: first it hugs it, then it sells it a preset.

Peaking

“Romanticizing your life.” This has reached maximum saturation, somewhere between a candle ad and a woman journaling beside a croissant she is absolutely not eating. The useful part—paying attention to small pleasures—will last. The cinematic voice-over, beige kitchen, and insistence that errands are a transformative spiritual journey should fade the moment someone remembers that buying detergent is not a character arc.

Fading

The public apology essay. Nobody wants six slides of accountability language followed by “I’m taking time to listen and learn,” especially when the original offense was liking a problematic post in 2019. Audiences are increasingly suspicious of polished remorse because it reads less like reflection and more like legal copy with a sad selfie attached. Actual apologies will survive; the genre of the apology as content is on its way out.

Trixie’s Take

The most overhyped trend this week is “digital minimalism” from people who announce their screen break in a ten-part video series.
