The Group Chat Is Not a Courtroom

Two readers are learning that “I was just being honest” is often the emergency flare of someone who has made things worse. Darla has the receipts—and one very simple next move for each mess.

Dear Darla,

My sister-in-law made a comment at dinner about how my husband “finally looks happy again,” which everyone understood was a dig at me because we had a rough year. I laughed it off, then sent her a three-paragraph text at 1:14 a.m. explaining exactly why she is jealous, passive-aggressive, and emotionally stunted. She showed my husband, who says I embarrassed him and now I’m “feeding the drama.” I feel like I’m the only person who is allowed to be upset here. Do I apologize?

—Married to the Group Chat

Dear Married,

Yes. Apologize for the midnight character assassination, not for being hurt. Her comment was rude, but your response turned one ugly little spark into a backyard fireworks display. You don’t get extra points because your analysis of her childhood wounds was probably accurate.

Tell her: “Your comment at dinner hurt me. I shouldn’t have sent an angry late-night message or labeled you. I’m sorry for that part. Going forward, don’t make comments about my marriage.” Then stop. No footnotes, no screenshots, no family summit. If she responds with more nonsense, your husband can handle his sister while you protect your peace by leaving the digital arena.

Dear Darla,

I work with a guy who constantly “forgets” to do his part, then acts surprised when deadlines slip. I started copying our manager on every email, including ones that said things like “Just checking whether you’ve had a chance to do the thing you said you’d do three times.” Now my manager says I’m “escalating unnecessarily,” while my coworker gets to float around like a handsome office balloon. How do I make it clear that I’m not the problem?

—Tired of Carrying Kevin

Dear Tired,

You may not be the problem, but you are currently making yourself look like the problem. Copying the manager on every tiny reminder reads less like documentation and more like you’ve appointed yourself hallway monitor.

Switch tactics. Keep a private record of missed assignments, dates, reminders, and the effect on the project. Then schedule one calm conversation with your manager: “I want to clarify ownership and deadlines because work is being delayed. Here are three examples. What process should we use when a commitment is missed?” Ask for written task assignments or a shared deadline tracker. That turns your complaint into a management issue, where it belongs.

Your action step: before sending another emotional message or adding another person to an email, wait 30 minutes and rewrite it as three facts, one impact, and one requested solution.

Got a mess involving relatives, coworkers, neighbors, or your own questionable texting habits? Write to Darla.
