Taylor Swift will make history tomorrow night, September 27, at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) when she receives the first-ever Artist Director Honors. Paramount, the parent company of CBS and MTV, announced the new award, which recognizes groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced visual storytelling.
This new award acknowledges Swift's extensive directorial work. She has received seven nominations for Best Director at the VMAs and has won four times in that category. Her directorial credits include 'The Man,' 'The Fate of Ophelia,' 'Opalite,' and 'Anti-hero.' Her first directorial effort, 'The Man' in 2020, earned her a Moon Person award.
The Artist Director Honors will also push Swift past Beyoncé for the most VMA wins. Both artists currently hold 30 VMA wins each, but with this guaranteed award, Swift will have at least 31 after tomorrow night's ceremony. Beyoncé is not nominated for any VMAs this year. Swift is also nominated for nine other VMAs this year, placing her second only to Madonna in total VMA nominations.
Snoop Dogg will host the VMAs. The ceremony will also feature a tribute to George Michael, which Paramount announced on Tuesday, and Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award.
