Lakeland residents could soon see changes to traffic enforcement and police technology after the City Council discussed proposals Monday, Oct. 5. The council considered installing new traffic infraction detection systems and enhancing police technology services.
The proposed traffic cameras aim to reduce red light violations on Bartow Road, U.S. 98, Kathleen Road, Memorial Road, and Socrum Loop Road. City officials hope these installations will improve road safety as traffic increases.
The council also reviewed an updated agreement with Axon Enterprise Inc. The proposal would provide the Lakeland Police Department with additional body and in-car cameras, TASER devices, advanced AI technologies and a drone. The AI Era Plan aims to assist officers with data analysis, transcription and investigative processes.
The council will make a final decision on these proposals at a future meeting. More information is available on the city's official website.
