Emerald Lake: Rocky Mountain’s Best Three-Mile Payoff

The trail to Emerald Lake packs three alpine lakes, plenty of “wow” moments, and just enough uphill to make your sandwich taste heroic. Here’s how to do it without getting blindsided by altitude, crowds, or afternoon ice.

I just got back from the Emerald Lake Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park, and I’m going to say it plainly: this is one of the best short hikes in the country. It starts at the Bear Lake Trailhead and runs 3.6 miles round trip, with about 605 feet of elevation gain. That makes it moderate, but the altitude is the real boss here. The trail begins around 9,450 feet, which is high enough to make a perfectly fit person breathe like they’ve been chased by a bear.

At the trailhead, the air smells like sun-warmed pine needles, damp granite, and that faint cold-metal scent you get near mountain water. The first mile is a steady, rooty climb through lodgepole pine and spruce. Nothing is frighteningly steep, but there are rocks and steps, so little kids may need patience and snacks deployed at regular intervals. The reward comes quickly: Nymph Lake appears first, tucked below the trees like a quiet little bowl of blue.

Keep climbing and the forest starts to loosen. At Dream Lake, the view opens properly, with jagged peaks reflected in dark water and boulders everywhere—excellent seats for lunch, if you don’t mind sharing them with chipmunks who have the confidence of tiny gangsters. The final stretch to Emerald Lake is narrower and often rougher, but the payoff is the biggest: a cold green lake beneath Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain. On a calm morning, the reflection is almost absurdly good.

Most visitors miss the small cascade between Nymph and Dream lakes. It is just off the main route, easy to overlook when everyone is hustling toward the next postcard view. Stop for a minute. The water slides through polished rock, and you can usually find a quieter place to catch your breath.

Go in summer or early fall, ideally before 8 a.m. Parking at Bear Lake fills very early, and the park’s shuttle system is often the least aggravating option. Bring water, layers, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, and lunch; weather changes fast. Watch out for afternoon thunderstorms and lingering snow or ice, especially in spring and early summer. Also, don’t mistake feeling fine at the trailhead for being acclimated. Take it slow, drink water, and turn around if your head starts pounding. This hike is fun. It is not a referendum on your character.
