Cold Water, Warm Pockets, and the Jerkbait Bite

March fish are not lazy; they’re selective. Find the warmest water in the system, slow down, and let a suspending jerkbait do the lying for you.

What’s Biting

Early spring is a tug-of-war between winter and whatever season the calendar claims it is. Largemouth bass are sliding toward shallow gravel, dark-bottomed coves, and protected creek arms when the sun gets high. Smallmouth are nosing around rock and current seams. In saltwater, striped bass, redfish, speckled trout, and other inshore predators are using moving water to ambush baitfish, especially on the last third of an incoming tide and the first hour of the outgoing.

The best freshwater window is usually 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when a sunny bank can warm a few degrees above the main lake. Inshore, fish the tide rather than the clock: work creek mouths, drains, and oyster edges as the water starts falling. Live shrimp, small mullet, and soft-plastic imitations all earn their keep right now.

Main Column: Make a Jerkbait Look Cold

Everybody wants to fish faster when the water is cold. That is exactly how you get skunked with excellent posture. Tie on a suspending jerkbait in a natural shad, smelt, or minnow pattern and cast it across the edge of a warming flat, especially where a creek channel swings near shallow water. Use 8- to 10-pound fluorocarbon on a medium-light or medium rod. The lighter line helps the bait reach its advertised depth and keeps the pause honest.

Work it with two sharp snaps, then let it sit. Count five seconds to start. If the water is below 50 degrees, count to ten or fifteen. Bass will follow that bait like it owes them money, then eat it while it’s doing absolutely nothing. Watch the line during the pause. The bite often feels like you hooked a wet sock, which is why anglers miss it and then blame the lure.

One spring morning, a boy in the next boat hooked what he thought was a bass on a jerkbait. His father netted it, and we all leaned over to admire the fish. It was a respectable largemouth—until it opened its mouth and revealed a two-inch bluegill already lodged sideways in there. The bass had apparently decided breakfast needed a side dish. The boy released both fish, then announced he was “done fishing because nothing better can happen.” He was right, frankly.

Dock Talk

• On an outgoing tide, cast up-current and let the bait sweep naturally past creek mouths and points.

• Replace rusty jerkbait hooks now. Cold-water fish don’t give you many chances, and bad hooks waste the one you get.

• Tactical advice: fish the warmest water you can find, not the shallowest water. A two-degree difference beats ten feet of wishful thinking.
