A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Sweetwater, Natrona, and Johnson Counties until 7:00 PM MDT today, October 9. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Riverton has issued this warning due to critical fire weather conditions.
Residents in Sweetwater County (including Rock Springs BLM and Flaming Gorge NRA), Natrona County (including Casper BLM), Johnson County (including Casper BLM), and the Granite, Green, Ferris, and Rattlesnake Mountains should be aware of a heightened risk of fire. Strong southwest winds between 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, combined with low humidity (10-15%) and unseasonably warm temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, create conditions for erratic fire behavior.
The NWS advises that a Red Flag Warning signifies that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Exercise extreme caution with any potential ignition sources.
