Richmond to Celebrate 30th Anniversary of Special Olympics with Parade June 6

The City of Richmond is proud to be the host city for the Kentucky Special Olympics Summer Games with EKU serving as the host site. But 2025 is an extra extraordinary year.2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Kentucky Special Olympics Summer Games being held in Richmond on the “Campus Beautiful,” Eastern Kentucky University.The City of Richmond and EKU will celebrate this milestone by having a “mini” parade featuring the Special Olympics athletes during their annual torch run on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 4 PM.The city is inviting our many friends and community partners to help us with this event. We are hoping to line Lancaster Avenue from West Main Street to the EKU pedway with as many supporters as we can to encourage and the participants and volunteers. We ask that you make a sign, wave a flag, carry balloons and just come out and cheer on our guests.Supporters are asked to stand along Lancaster Ave. beginning at 3:30/3:45 PM on Friday, June 6th. Parking will be available in EKU’s Adams lot, EKU’s Lancaster lot or at Richmond City Park. The torch run begins at the Richmond Police Dept. at 4 PM the police escort of the procession (rolling roadblock) should reach Lancaster Ave. by approximately 4:15.The entire event shouldn’t take much more than an hour of your time. It is the city’s sincere hope that you will come out and be a part of this uniquely Richmond event.
