Rip Current Statement Issued for Coastal Georgia, Exercise Caution

A Rip Current Statement has been issued for Coastal Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, and McIntosh counties, effective immediately until Saturday evening, warning of dangerous rip currents.

Coastal residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution at Georgia beaches due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC.

This Moderate severity alert for dangerous rip currents is effective immediately, October 9, 2026, at 2:16 PM UTC, and remains in effect until Saturday evening, October 10, 2026, at 8:00 PM EDT. The affected areas include Coastal Bryan, Coastal Chatham, Coastal Liberty, and Coastal McIntosh counties.

Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The NWS advises beachgoers to swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, remain calm, relax, and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
