Coastal residents and visitors are advised to avoid swimming in the ocean due to a Rip Current Statement and High Surf Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS Charleston SC). These conditions are in effect for Coastal Bryan, Coastal Chatham, Coastal Liberty, and Coastal McIntosh counties.

The Rip Current Statement is effective from October 6 at 8:02 PM EDT until October 7 at 8:00 PM EDT. The High Surf Advisory, featuring large breaking waves of 1 to 5 feet in the surf zone, is in effect until 2 PM EDT on Wednesday.

Dangerous rip currents can sweep even experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water. Swimmers should always be near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Impacts include dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion.
