TMCC Veterans Center Brings VA Services to Reno Campus
Truckee Meadows Community College's Veterans and Families Center now offers VA healthcare, mental health support, and federal career counseling on site, eliminating barriers for student veterans seeking help.
VA representatives visit campus regularly to provide benefits assistance and social work services. The partnership recently expanded to include town halls and resource fairs connecting veterans with programs without leaving campus.
"They don't have to worry about going and seeking those resources. It's all here," said Felipe Gutierrez de Alba, program director at the center.
TMCC students from nursing, EMS, logistics, and graphic design programs toured VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System to explore federal career opportunities. The center also hosts mental health programming, including a recent documentary screening on trauma therapies and expanded counseling services for sexual violence survivors.
The center serves hundreds of TMCC students using veteran benefits, plus spouses and dependents eligible under recent federal policy changes. Gutierrez de Alba said the center's name includes "families" to signal inclusion.
