Sparks Free Green Waste Dumpsters Reduce Fire Risk

Staff Writer
June 12, 2026

The Sparks Fire Department placed green waste dumpsters at six city locations to help residents remove vegetation and create defensible space around their homes.

A $29,000 grant from the Nevada Fire Chiefs Association funds the program. Each dumpster displays educational banners and QR codes linking to wildfire prevention resources from Fire Adapted Nevada and the Living with Fire Program.

Residents can access dumpsters at Culpepper Drive near Nashua Place, Homerun Drive at Touchdown Drive (entrance to GERP), Shadow Mountain Park's north parking lot, Village Knoll Drive and Sparks Boulevard, Wedekind Regional Park at 11 Disc Drive, and Vecchio Drive east of Vincinato Drive.

The dumpsters accept leaves, branches, and grass clippings at no cost to Sparks residents. Furniture, appliances, hazardous chemicals, and construction materials are prohibited. The city will charge individuals for illegal dumping.

Waste Management supplied the dumpsters at a discounted rate. The city will remove dumpsters as they reach capacity.
