Rip Current Statement Issued: Dangerous Conditions on Island Beaches
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron Islands until Sunday morning, bringing dangerous rip currents, high surf, and coastal flooding; inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water.
Residents and visitors to Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island are advised of dangerous rip currents, high surf, and coastal flooding. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Brownsville, TX has issued a Rip Current Statement effective immediately, October 10 at 7:08 AM CDT, and continuing through Sunday morning, October 11 at 7:00 AM CDT.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 7 AM CDT Sunday, and a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening. These conditions bring large breaking waves of 3 to 6 feet in the surf zone. Nuisance flooding is expected, with water potentially reaching or pushing into the dunes on South Padre Island. Driving on the beach, particularly north of Public Beach Access #3, will be restricted to vehicles with four-wheel drive and high wheel bases. Minor to moderate beach erosion is also expected.
Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are anticipated. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises to remain calm, float, and avoid swimming against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and signal for help. Inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water. If travel is necessary, allow extra time for potential road closures and do not drive through flooded areas or around barricades. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take protective measures.
