Our poll workers are trained individuals who are active voters, serving their community with pride. They interact well with the public and work well in stressful situations. Requirements Hillsborough County poll workers must complete all required onboarding including but not limited to background screening. Additionally, effective January 1, 2021, all new poll workers are required to complete employment eligibility verification (Form I-9 and E-Verification) in accordance with F.S. 448.095. Hillsborough County poll workers are required to: Sign up for direct deposit Be a registered voter in Hillsborough County Read, write and speak the English language Be able to work a 14-hour day, with patience and courtesy to others Be able to lift 15 to 30 pounds Have an email address and access to a computer and the internet Have reliable transportation Successfully complete all training and assessments prior to each election Remain nonpartisan while at the polls Refrain from any comments or discussion concerning a voter, a voter’s party preference, a candidate, or issue, while working at the polls Abide by a no smoking policy Treat everyone with dignity and respect at all times Poll workers are required by law to complete training prior to each election. Positions All poll workers must complete poll worker training and plan to work at their polling place on Election Day from 6 am until the last voter has voted, closing procedures have been completed and you are dismissed by the Clerk. Poll workers will also help set up their polling place the day before the election. (Poll workers who help with setup receive a small additional stipend.) The Clerk is in charge of the overall management of the tasks, activities and poll workers in the polling place. The Clerk ensures that order is maintained, policies and procedures are followed and the election team performs its duties correctly. The Assistant Clerk assists the Clerk and is ready and available to serve as Clerk in the event the Clerk is unable to perform his or her duties. The Assistant Clerk uses an electronic poll book to verify voter information and communicates with the Supervisor of Elections Office to resolve voter eligibility issues. An Inspector sets up and maintains our electronic poll books used for voter check-in and our DS300 ballot scanners/tabulators. They also rotate positions to check in voters using an electronic poll book, issue ballots, instruct voters on where and how to mark and cast their ballot, and hand out our popular "I Voted" stickers. A Deputy maintains order outside the polling place, assists in marking the no solicitation zone, ensures compliance with the no solicitation zone and ensures that the polling room is accessible to all voters. Early Voting Approximately 25% of our Election Day poll workers serve in positions during the two weeks of Early Voting prior to Election Day. Early Voting poll worker assignments require a seven-day work commitment and workdays alternate over the two weeks of Early Voting. Early Voting poll workers must also commit to work on Election Day. Start and end times will vary, depending on the Early Voting schedule. Poll workers work until the final voter of the day has left and end of day duties are completed. Some Early Voting workers will be assigned to assist with setting up their site prior to the first day of Early Voting. All Early Voting poll workers assist with closing and packing up their site on the last day of Early Voting. Poll Worker Pay Early Voting Hourly Rate Clerk: $17 per hour Assistant Clerk: $16 per hour Inspector / Deputy: $15 per hour Election Day Lump Sum (Lump sum includes training and working election day): Clerk: $391 Assistant Clerk: $368 Inspector/Deputy: $330 Hillsborough County Employees utilizing Civic Leave (Civic leave stipend includes training and working election day): Clerk: $195.50 Assistant Clerk: $184 Inspector/Deputy: $165 How to apply We’re looking for friendly people who can confidently work with voters so they have a great experience voting. As a poll worker, you’ll be checking in voters, handing out ballots, directing people around the polling place, keeping equipment running, or giving out “I Voted” stickers. All poll workers must meet some basic requirements. For example, you must be registered to vote in Hillsborough County, and you must be able to work for at least 14 hours on Election Day. It's a 2-Step Process The online application process will take about 15 to 30 minutes, so please make sure you have the time to complete it before beginning. Step 1: You’ll answer some questions to make sure you meet the basic requirements for being a poll worker in Hillsborough County. Step 2: You'll complete the poll worker application. New poll workers will also complete a short assessment on customer service, leadership, computer knowledge, and attention to detail, as well as a survey.
