CLARKE COUNTY — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Clarke County, effective October 8 at 4:11 PM CDT. This watch indicates that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours. Residents are urged to take immediate action to complete preparations.

Forecasters anticipate peak winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to outdoor structures like porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect broken tree limbs and potential power outages. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Act now to complete preparations before hazardous winds begin.

A Flood Watch is also in effect for Clarke County, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams could overflow. Flooding could impact foundations, cause rapid inundation in low-lying areas, and make driving hazardous. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.

The NWS currently reports that conditions are unfavorable for tornadoes. However, showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. The Tropical Storm Watch expires October 9 at 12:15 AM UTC. Stay informed of the latest forecasts from the NWS Jackson MS.
