A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Clarke County by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, effective October 8 at 10:16 PM CDT. Residents should prepare for hazardous wind and moderate flooding rain. This watch will remain in effect until October 9 at 6:15 AM UTC.

The NWS forecasts peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Efforts to protect property should begin immediately. Expect limited damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Large tree limbs may break, and some fences and signs could be blown over. Scattered power and communication outages are possible. Complete preparations now before winds become hazardous.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding is a potential impact, which could lead to evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams could overflow. Flooding could affect structures, and some roads may become impassable due to debris. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed all flood watches and warnings. Failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.

Tornadoes are not expected at this time, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Stay informed for any changes in the forecast.
