Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Clarke County, Prepare for Hazardous Wind

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Clarke County, prompting residents to prepare for hazardous winds, potential limited damage, and a Flood Watch for moderate flooding rain.

Clarke County residents should immediately begin preparations for hazardous wind conditions as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS. This watch is in effect from October 9, 2026, at 4:09 AM UTC until 12:15 PM UTC.

The NWS forecasts peak winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for winds reaching 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect many large tree limbs to break, and some trees may snap or be uprooted. Roads could become impassable from debris, and scattered power and communications outages are anticipated. Residents should complete all preparations before hazardous winds begin.

A Flood Watch is also in effect for Clarke County, with potential for moderate flooding rain and approximately 1 inch of rainfall. Emergency plans should account for the possibility of moderate flooding, evacuations, and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and floodwaters could impact structures, underpasses, and low-lying areas. Heed any flood watches and warnings.

Tornadoes are not expected at this time, though gusty winds from showers and thunderstorms may still occur. Residents are advised to stay informed of the latest weather updates from the NWS Jackson MS.
