Georgia West, Winston-Salem Theatre Volunteer and Community Leader, 93

Georgia Nicolas West, age 93, died on May 10, 2026 after several years of declining health. She was born in Augusta, GA on August 21, 1932 to the late Alexis Ravenez and Rosalyn Poole Nicolas. Her family moved to Winston-Salem in 1936, where she remained a resident until her death. She graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1950 then matriculated to Woman’s College (now UNCG) where she graduated with a BA degree in Biology in 1954. After graduating college, she began work at Western Electric as a technical assistant in the lab section. While working there, she was introduced to an electrical engineer named Warren F. West Jr. The introduction was the beginning of a lifelong relationship full of love and devotion. He proposed on March 26, 1955 and they were married on August 20, 1955. She resigned from her job about a year later to focus on building a family. They had four children, Ellen Lynn, Warren III, William Glenn, and John Brannon.Georgia was a dutiful homemaker and mother. While raising four children requires considerable effort, she still managed to pursue interests outside the home. One significant interest was her lifelong love of theatre. It was multi-faceted. She enjoyed attending shows, acting, and volunteering with makeup design. Georgia was involved with The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem for over 5 decades - Acting in multiple shows, and providing makeup support for many others. She assisted with other theatre aspects, from house manager, box office, and archive preservation. She was a member of the Board of Directors for many years, serving as Board President from 1982-1984.While Georgia was proud of her involvement with LTWS, she felt there was support in the community for even more theater. In 1983, she was part of a group who founded the Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance. Her level of involvement with WSTA was similar to that with LTWS. Over the years, WS Theatre Alliance has grown into one of the prominent theater groups in town. Georgia enjoyed participating with multiple theater groups, and seeing their growth in the city. In the late 80s, Georgia and Kay Johnson started Johnson-West Associates, where she was a talent agent and assisted many local actors to find paying work. She was also involved with production of Carolina Street Scene and the Crosby Clambake.Georgia was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church, having served as a Sunday School leader, and coordinator of many fellowship entertainment shows. She volunteered teaching Creative Dramatics at Brunson Elementary. She enjoyed traveling, particularly after Warren’s retirement. He and Georgia regularly traveled to Europe and many parts of the US. Many of the trips included the children and grandchildren, making lots of memories.Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Warren F West Jr, her brother Alexis Ravenez Nicolas Jr, and her sister Rosalyn Nicolas MacDonald. She is survived by her 4 children, Ellen West Law, Warren F West III (Marsie), W Glenn West (Becki), and John B West (Ann) of Charlotte; 7 grandchildren, Fletcher West, Nicolas West (Hannah), Grace West (Nicolas Stougaard), Matthew West, Connor Law (Mandy), Paige W Krantz (Robert), and Brannon West (Valentina); 3 great grandchildren, Margaret, Bella, and Eleanor; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank the staff at Homestead Hills for all their love and care during Georgia’s six years there. A celebration of life will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 300 N Cherry St in Winston-Salem on Saturday, June 6th at 2pm. A private committal service for the immediate family will be held prior to the celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Georgia’s honor to the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem, Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance, First Presbyterian Church, or the charity of your choice.

Michael Todd Hipp, Winston-Salem Carpenter and Family Man, 65

Michael Todd Hipp, 65, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 18, 2026, surrounded by family after a short battle with leukemia.Born on October 11, 1960, in Whitmire, South Carolina, to Judy Lindler Hipp and the late Ned Hawkins Hipp.Todd graduated from North Forsyth High School and continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Forsyth Technical Community College. After working in construction, he followed in his father’s footsteps and developed a true love for woodworking and carpentry, a craft he carried with him throughout his life. For 31 years, Todd shared a loving marriage with his wife, Wendy May Hipp. Together they built a life centered around family, quiet moments, and the people they loved most. He is also survived by his son, Michael Bryce Hipp (fiancée Amy Ballman); his daughter, Kirsten Mae Hipp (fiancé Shaun Gizdic) and his brothers, Russ Hipp and Steve Hipp (Martha Hipp).Todd most valued time with his family. He loved evenings grilling on the back deck, cheering on his favorite teams, and simply being surrounded by people he loved. Quiet by nature but endlessly funny, he had a sharp sense of humor, a generous spirit, and with an incredibly soft heart, had a way of caring for others that left a lasting impact on everyone around him.He was an avid sports fan, especially the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as his children’s alma maters, the South Carolina Gamecocks and the East Carolina Pirates. The crimson ribbon representing the leukemia he bravely battled mirrors the color of one of his most beloved teams, Alabama. A detail those close to him would have appreciated.A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 30, 2026, followed immediately by a Celebration of Life gathering. The service will be held at Salem Funeral at 2951 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106. As many know, Todd had a deep love for animals, especially dogs. Dorothy Law, Winston-Salem Traveler and Salem College Graduate, 80

Dottye yearned to travel, and when a chance came to visit New Zealand she was determined to go. But she had a problem; she was broke. So she borrowed $25 from every friend she could think of (and there were many), promising to pay them all back, (she did), and cobbled together the funds for the exhilarating trip that opened the world for her. She became an intrepid traveler both abroad and in the United States.Dorothy Elaine Law was born on April 20, 1946, to John Wesley Law and Rachael Tolson Law in Winston-Salem, N.C. and spent most of her life living in Forsyth County. She had two sisters, Cora Angie and Patsy Jean. All are now deceased. Dottye died peacefully on May 24 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after a long illness.Always ready for adventure, Dottye visited all but six of the states in the US and many countries. Over her last months, her illness kept her housebound, but she was excited for her final voyage. She’d never been on a cruise and she said, “Death will be like leaving on a big boat and not having to worry about returning or becoming ill on board.”Dottye read widely and was particularly drawn to books about people who overcame great trials. She credits books and a lust for learning in helping her survive a traumatic childhood. Forced to leave school before finishing high school, she finally, in her thirties, realized a dream and entered Salem College in Winston-Salem, majoring in Economics/Management and Anthropology. By this time, she was married and busy raising three children. Still, she made lifelong friends with some of the other older students and with many of her professors. Later she earned a Master’s in Public Health from UNC Greensboro.Dottye held a variety of jobs in public health. For many years she worked at Wake Forest School of Medicine. One of her roles was teaching medical students how to communicate better with patients and their caregivers. In her last job before retiring, she created educational programs at the SECU Family House in Winston Salem that brought together families staying at the House and those who were training in many health-related fields to work with patients. The primary goals were to raise awareness about the impact of illness on the entire family and to help improve understanding between families and medical institutions.Making and cultivating deep friendships -- and connecting people -- were hallmarks of Dottye’s outgoing personality. She was a member of Friendship Force International. She made friends everywhere and kept up with people all over the world. She was always ready to listen. As her grandson said, “She always showed up.” In addition to her close knit “Fab 4,” Dottye belonged to a long-standing book club and to the Farther Along women, a group of bereaved mothers who have gathered to write and travel together for almost 25 years. She prepared for one road trip to Red Cloud, Nebraska, the childhood home of author Willa Cather, by devouring every word Cather wrote and reading every biography.Dottye also adored cooking. Her kitchen was her “happy place.” She cooked bountiful, delicious meals for her family and many friends and acquaintances. Everyone was always welcome at Dottye’s table, especially for “big breakfast.”  She was also obsessed with playing all types of games.  Another “happy place?” Being behind the wheel of her car. She loved to drive and often took spontaneous road trips to visit loved ones.Dottye was devoted to her family and thrilled to become a grandmother for the fourth time at age 77. She is survived by a daughter, Karin Solomonson (Chad); and two grown grandchildren, Emily Solomonson Sandoval (Carlos) and Boden; her son, Glenn Snyder (Jonni), and two grandchildren, Tayson and Lindy; a German exchange student who became like another daughter, Birgit Hellerbrand, and her son, Sebastian; and her two stepdaughters, Debby Peck and Vicky Kirgan. She is predeceased by two beloved men, her husband Walt Currin and her son Alex Snyder. In lieu of a funeral, Dottye and Karin hosted a celebration of life for Dottye’s 80th birthday. They called it a FUNeral. The party featured a bluegrass band, singers, a full lunch spread, and multiple birthday cakes. More than eighty friends attended, and everyone had a chance to spend time with Dottye. After the party she said, “I just wish I could have made sure everyone there met everyone else.”Online condolences may be sent to: www.salemfh.comIn celebration of Dottye’s life and work, contributions may be made to:Salem CollegeUNCG Master’s Program in Public HealthThe SECU Family House in Winston-SalemThe Arts-Based School in Winston-Salem
