Azerbaijan's Muslim Majority Embraces Secular Lifestyle

Surveys from the late Soviet and early post-Soviet periods indicate that Azerbaijan maintains a largely secular outlook, despite a Muslim majority. While estimates suggest 93% to 99% of the population adheres to Islam, many identify with the religion primarily as an ethnic or nationalistic marker rather than a strictly religious one.

A 1998 poll, for instance, found that only 20% of the population were ardent believers. Data from 2011, reported by the U.S. Department of State, placed the Muslim population at 96%, with 65% Shia and 35% Sunni. However, these distinctions receive minimal official emphasis, and the overall importance of religion in daily life has consistently been noted as low.
