Main page thumbnail size

ITN tends not to display maps even when they would be appropriate because they are thought to be too illegible as a thumbnail. Pondering this deficiency, it seems that the main page has not been keeping up with the general trend to make thumbnails larger. The default size of main page thumbnails seems to be determined by Module:Main page image and seems to be around 140px by default. But the regular default for thumbnails across the site is now 250px and one can make then even larger in one's preferences. I use the Large preference myself and so find the main page thumbnails to be quite tiny. So, we should increase the default size for main page thumbnails in line with the general trend or leave them to be determined by the user preference. This will make the images more detailed and that will help with the more complex images like maps. Andrew🐉(talk) 21:46, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply the default mainspace size works because it assumes only one image on a "row" of text, so what it displaces in text does not make the text unreadable. But on the main page with the two column format, where each box can have a image, two images at the larger size, in addition to the border elements, will squeeze the text in each box too much. Hence the need for the smaller size. There are ways to make some maps usable at the main page suze byt that requires elementing some details and utilizing large fonts for clarity Masem (t) 21:58, 14 September 2026 (UTC)

Errors in the summary of the featured picture

"Notice to administrators: When fixing POTD errors, please update the corresponding regular version (i.e. without "protected" in the page title) in addition to the Main Page version linked below. Today's POTD Tomorrow's POTD "This salema porgy was photographed in Catania, Sicily, Italy." Catania is a city, so "in Catania" implies a photograph in an aquarium. This is not clear from the information with the photograph (no preposition is used), and it seems as likely that it was taken in the sea off Catania. Maybe we should omit this sentence rather than risk being misleading. JMCHutchinson (talk) 18:57, 12 September 2026 (UTC) so "in Catania" implies a photograph in an aquarium No, it doesn't and it seems as likely that it was taken in the sea off Catania Or as likely that it was taken in the sea in Catania. Catania have a port, and definitely have some part of the sea in its borders. ~2026-49709-32 (talk) 00:09, 13 September 2026 (UTC)"
