E. Jean Carroll Receives $5.6 Million in Trump Sexual Abuse and Defamation Case

E. Jean Carroll collected a $5.6 million payment on Monday in connection with a sexual abuse and defamation case against former President Donald Trump. The payment, which includes interest, occurred two weeks after the Supreme Court declined to hear Trump’s appeal of a $5 million jury verdict. Court records and Carroll's legal representatives confirmed the transaction.

Trump’s legal team had sought to prevent the payment. They are pursuing efforts to reverse it, pending a decision from the justices regarding their filed petition for rehearing. Separately, Trump is also appealing an $83 million defamation judgment awarded to Carroll by a different Manhattan jury following a 2024 trial.

In other court-related news, Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett testified for nearly four hours before House and Senate subcommittees on Tuesday. Their testimonies covered various topics, including the court's budget, security, ethics code enforcement, and its emergency docket.

On the same day, the Supreme Court denied a request for a stay of execution from Dennis Sochor, who faced a death sentence for the 1982 murder of Patricia Gifford. Sochor was executed in Florida hours later.

The court is scheduled to release the first of three summer order lists on Monday at 9:30 a.m. EDT.

Separately, the U.S. Treasury Department reported a $120 billion federal budget deficit for June. This increase is partly attributed to growing refunds from tariffs implemented by the Trump administration. The Supreme Court struck down these tariffs in February. Refunds totaled $49.2 billion in June, adding to approximately $22 billion returned in May. This $71 billion represents 42% of the $166 billion subject to refunds. The Trump administration's tariff policy is currently in flux, with a temporary 10% global tariff set to expire on July 24.
